Keeping your vehicle in top shape doesn’t always require a trip to the mechanic. With the right tools, knowledge, and a bit of elbow grease, you can perform a DIY auto tune-up to boost performance, improve fuel efficiency, and extend your car’s lifespan. Whether you’re in Round Rock, Hutto, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Jarrell, Cedar Park, or North Austin, Texas, these practical tips will help you get started. However, for those looking to save time, money, and stress, consider scheduling a professional tune-up with Don't Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair—we bring the service to you!

Why DIY Auto Tune-Ups Matter
Regular tune-ups prevent costly repairs by addressing small issues before they escalate. They also enhance fuel economy, reduce emissions, and ensure your safety on the road. By tackling basic maintenance yourself, you can save on labor costs while gaining confidence in your vehicle’s upkeep.

Essential DIY Auto Tune-Up Tips
1. Check and Replace Air Filters
  • Why It Matters: A clogged air filter restricts airflow to the engine, reducing performance and fuel efficiency.
  • How to Do It: Locate the air filter box (usually near the front of the engine). Open it, remove the old filter, and replace it with a new one compatible with your vehicle model. Check your owner’s manual for specifics.
  • Frequency: Every 12,000-15,000 miles or as recommended by your car manufacturer.
2. Inspect and Replace Spark Plugs
  • Why It Matters: Worn spark plugs can cause misfires, poor acceleration, and increased fuel consumption.
  • How to Do It: Disconnect the battery, remove the ignition coils, and unscrew the old spark plugs with a spark plug socket. Install new ones, ensuring proper gap settings (check your manual). Reassemble carefully.
  • Frequency: Every 30,000-100,000 miles, depending on the type (copper vs. platinum/iridium).
3. Change the Oil and Oil Filter
  • Why It Matters: Fresh oil lubricates engine components, reducing wear and tear.
  • How to Do It: Warm up the engine slightly, drain the old oil into a pan, replace the oil filter, and refill with the recommended oil type and amount. Dispose of old oil responsibly at a recycling center.
  • Frequency: Every 3,000-7,500 miles, depending on your vehicle and oil type.
4. Check Fluid Levels
  • Why It Matters: Low brake fluid, coolant, or transmission fluid can lead to serious issues.
  • How to Do It: Pop the hood and locate the reservoirs (marked with icons or labels). Use a dipstick for oil or transmission fluid, and top off with the correct fluid type if needed. Look for leaks while you’re at it.
  • Frequency: Monthly or before long trips.
5. Inspect Belts and Hoses
  • Why It Matters: Cracked or loose belts and hoses can cause overheating or power steering failure.
  • How to Do It: Visually inspect for cracks, fraying, or looseness. Tighten or replace as needed with the right tools (e.g., wrench for tension adjustment).
  • Frequency: Every 10,000 miles or during other tune-up tasks.

Tools You’ll Need
  • Basic wrench set
  • Spark plug socket
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Funnel and drain pan
  • Replacement parts (filters, plugs, oil, fluids)
  • Safety gloves and goggles

Safety First
Always work on a flat surface, disconnect the battery when working on electrical components, and never smoke near fuel or oil. If you’re unsure, consult your vehicle’s manual or a professional.

3 Tips to Protect Your Engine from Texas Heat

6/3/2025

The Texas heat is coming! Please watch for these three signs and be proactive to protect your engine. We don’t want to see any of our clients blow an engine over a simple repair or maintenance issue.

  1. Pay Attention to Your AC: If your AC isn’t blowing cold it could mean that you need a simple recharge, which we can provide. However, it could also be a sign that you’re losing water or coolant. We recently had a client blow an engine. After talking to them, they stated that their AC had stopped working about a week earlier. If we had known this we could have repaired the issue and saved their engine, which blew out because of water loss.
  2. Watch Your Temp Gauge: The instrument panel on the dash has a temperature gauge. If you notice it pushing toward the hot end - DO NOT DRIVE it. Even driving a few miles with a hot engine can blow the engine out. Leave it parked where it is and call us. We’ll drive to your vehicle. It could be as simple as low coolant or a faulty thermostat. Minor repairs or maintenance can save you from a huge bill to replace your engine.
  3. Be Aware of Odd Smells: If you smell coolant, burning, or rubber - STOP DRIVING your vehicle. Texas heat can create cracks in your rubber water hoses or plastic connection points. We’d make more money replacing your engine, but we want to SAVE YOU MONEY and fix the minor issues before they blow your engine and break your budget.

Call or Text us at 737-900-3213, or request a service appointment at www.dgbautorepair.com. Let’s keep your car cool and your summer worry-free!

We service Round Rock, Hutto, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Jarrell, Cedar Park, and Austin, Texas.

Stay safe and enjoy your summer,
Justin & the DGB Team
