Top 5 Tips to Avoid Getting Scammed by a Bad Mechanic

10/14/2025

Car repairs can be stressful, and the last thing you need is a dishonest mechanic taking advantage of you.  Here are our top five tips to avoid getting scammed by a bad mechanic in Round Rock, TX.

  1. 1. Research Before You Commit
Always check a mechanic’s reputation online. Look for reviews on Google, Yelp, or local forums. A trustworthy shop like Don't Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair will have positive feedback and clear pricing. Avoid mechanics with vague estimates or a history of complaints.

2. Make Sure Your Diagnostic Fee Is Credited to Your Repair
A reputable mechanic will credit your diagnostic fee toward your repair. Don't get scammed and lose money by paying for a diagnostic that isn't applied to your repair.

3. Know Your Car’s Symptoms

Before visiting a mechanic, note your vehicle’s specific issues—like strange noises or warning lights. This helps you communicate clearly and prevents mechanics from “diagnosing” fake problems. If you’re unsure, consult a trusted service like ours for a second opinion.

4. Avoid Upfront Payments

Reputable mechanics don’t demand full payment before work begins. Be wary of shops pressuring you to pay upfront or pushing costly, unneeded repairs. At Don't Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair, we prioritize honest assessments and fair pricing.

5. Seek Recommendations

Ask friends, family, or coworkers for mechanic referrals. A trusted recommendation can save you from scams. Better yet, choose a reliable mobile service like ours for convenience and integrity.

Don’t risk getting scammed!

Signs Your Auto Brakes Need Replacement – Don’t Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair

Your vehicle’s brakes are critical for safety, but how do you know when they need replacing? We're sharing our top five signs your auto brakes need replacement.

At
Don’t Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair, we’re here to help drivers in Round Rock, TX, and surrounding cities keep their vehicle's brakes safe for their families.

Here are the Top 5 Signs Your Brakes Need Replacement.

1. Squealing or Grinding Noises
If your brakes squeal or grind when applied, it’s a red flag. Squealing often indicates worn brake pads, while grinding suggests metal-on-metal contact, meaning the pads are completely worn. Don’t ignore these sounds—address them to avoid costly rotor damage.

2. Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal
A brake pedal that feels soft or sinks to the floor could signal low brake fluid, air in the brake lines, or worn components. This reduces braking efficiency and requires immediate attention to ensure safe driving.

3. Vibrations When Braking
If your steering wheel or brake pedal vibrates when stopping, your rotors may be warped. Warped rotors compromise braking performance and should be inspected and replaced promptly.

4. Longer Stopping Distances
If your vehicle takes longer to stop, your brake pads or rotors may be worn out. This is a serious safety concern, especially in emergencies, and requires professional evaluation.

5. Warning Light On
A brake warning light on your dashboard is a clear sign something’s wrong. It could indicate low brake fluid, worn pads, or an ABS issue.

Don’t delay—get it checked.

Keep Your Brakes Safe with Don’t Go Broke

Don’t risk your safety—text or call 737-900-3213 today to schedule your brake service and drive with confidence! Serving Round Rock, TX, and nearby areas, Don’t Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair offers expert brake inspections and replacements at your location.

How Summer Heat Affects Your Vehicle and Why a Fall Tune-Up is Essential

Summer in Texas brings scorching temperatures that can take a toll on your vehicle. From Round Rock to North Austin, the relentless heat can cause significant wear and tear, leading to costly breakdowns if not addressed. A fall tune-up with Don't Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair is the key to keeping your car running smoothly. Here’s why.Summer Heat: A Silent Threat to Your Vehicle..

High temperatures stress critical vehicle components. Here’s how:
  • Battery Strain: Extreme heat accelerates battery fluid evaporation, reducing its lifespan. A weakened battery may fail without warning, leaving you stranded.
  • Tire Damage: Hot pavement increases tire pressure, risking blowouts or uneven wear. Low tire tread can compromise safety, especially in fall’s unpredictable weather.
  • Engine Overheating: Summer heat pushes your cooling system to its limits. Radiators, hoses, and belts can degrade, leading to engine failure if not inspected.
  • Fluid Breakdown: Engine oil, transmission fluid, and coolant break down faster in high heat, reducing their effectiveness and causing internal damage.
  • AC Wear: Your air conditioning system works overtime in summer, straining compressors and refrigerant levels, which can lead to costly repairs.

Why a Fall Tune-Up is Crucial
A professional fall tune-up prevents these issues from escalating. At Don't Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair, we thoroughly inspect your vehicle’s battery, tires, cooling system, fluids, and brakes to ensure they’re ready for cooler months. The Hidden Damage Summer Heat Does to Your Vehicle and Why an End-of-Summer Maintenance Check IsEssential

7/30/2025

Summer heat can be brutal, not just for you but also for your vehicle. In Texas, where temperatures often soar, the intense heat can wreak havoc on your car’s components, leading to costly repairs if ignored. At Don't Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair, we understand the strain summer places on vehicles, which is why we’re here to help with convenient, top-notch service right at your home in Round Rock, Hutto, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Jarrell, Cedar Park, and North Austin, TX. Let’s explore the damage summer heat causes and why an end-of-summer maintenance check or tune-up is crucial.

How Summer Heat Damages Your Vehicle
High temperatures accelerate wear and tear on critical car parts. The engine, for instance, runs hotter, putting stress on the cooling system. Overheating can lead to warped cylinder heads, blown gaskets, or even engine failure. Tires are also vulnerable—excessive heat causes rubber to degrade faster, increasing the risk of blowouts. Battery life takes a hit too, as heat speeds up chemical reactions inside, reducing its efficiency. Additionally, the air conditioning system works overtime, straining the compressor and refrigerant levels.Fluids like oil, coolant, and transmission fluid break down under heat, losing their lubricating properties and causing friction-related damage. Even the interior isn’t safe—dashboard plastics can crack, and upholstery can fade. Ignoring these issues can turn minor problems into major expenses, leaving you stranded or facing hefty repair bills.

Why an End-of-Summer Maintenance Check Matters
After months of summer heat, your vehicle deserves a thorough inspection. An end-of-summer tune-up can catch issues early, preventing breakdowns and extending your car’s lifespan. At Don't Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair, our expert technicians perform comprehensive checks on your cooling system, battery, tires, fluids, and AC to ensure everything is in top shape. This proactive approach saves you time, stress, and money—key benefits of our mobile service.

Beware of Texas Flood Gas Issues

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNEMENT
With all the flooding in Central Texas, beware of where you buy gas!

Slow shipments means some stations are pumping from the bottom of their fuel storage
I responded to a call this week of a car dying after getting gas. Here is a sample of fuel I pulled from their tank.

See the murky liquid at the bottom??? It’s an oily (non fuel) substance.

The customer said the pump at the gas station was pumping really slow… That’s because it was pumping all this garbage off the bottom of the gas station tanks

If you’re having trouble with your engine or think you got bad gas call/text us at 737-900-3213.
We’ll come to you and get your ride running smoothly again.

Our mobile auto repair mechanics service vehicles in Round Rock, Hutto, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Jarrell, Cedar Park, and North Austin, Texas.

Keeping your vehicle in top shape doesn’t always require a trip to the mechanic. With the right tools, knowledge, and a bit of elbow grease, you can perform a DIY auto tune-up to boost performance, improve fuel efficiency, and extend your car’s lifespan. Whether you’re in Round Rock, Hutto, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Jarrell, Cedar Park, or North Austin, Texas, these practical tips will help you get started. However, for those looking to save time, money, and stress, consider scheduling a professional tune-up with Don't Go Broke Mobile Auto Repair—we bring the service to you!

Why DIY Auto Tune-Ups Matter
Regular tune-ups prevent costly repairs by addressing small issues before they escalate. They also enhance fuel economy, reduce emissions, and ensure your safety on the road. By tackling basic maintenance yourself, you can save on labor costs while gaining confidence in your vehicle’s upkeep.

Essential DIY Auto Tune-Up Tips
1. Check and Replace Air Filters
  • Why It Matters: A clogged air filter restricts airflow to the engine, reducing performance and fuel efficiency.
  • How to Do It: Locate the air filter box (usually near the front of the engine). Open it, remove the old filter, and replace it with a new one compatible with your vehicle model. Check your owner’s manual for specifics.
  • Frequency: Every 12,000-15,000 miles or as recommended by your car manufacturer.
2. Inspect and Replace Spark Plugs
  • Why It Matters: Worn spark plugs can cause misfires, poor acceleration, and increased fuel consumption.
  • How to Do It: Disconnect the battery, remove the ignition coils, and unscrew the old spark plugs with a spark plug socket. Install new ones, ensuring proper gap settings (check your manual). Reassemble carefully.
  • Frequency: Every 30,000-100,000 miles, depending on the type (copper vs. platinum/iridium).
3. Change the Oil and Oil Filter
  • Why It Matters: Fresh oil lubricates engine components, reducing wear and tear.
  • How to Do It: Warm up the engine slightly, drain the old oil into a pan, replace the oil filter, and refill with the recommended oil type and amount. Dispose of old oil responsibly at a recycling center.
  • Frequency: Every 3,000-7,500 miles, depending on your vehicle and oil type.
4. Check Fluid Levels
  • Why It Matters: Low brake fluid, coolant, or transmission fluid can lead to serious issues.
  • How to Do It: Pop the hood and locate the reservoirs (marked with icons or labels). Use a dipstick for oil or transmission fluid, and top off with the correct fluid type if needed. Look for leaks while you’re at it.
  • Frequency: Monthly or before long trips.
5. Inspect Belts and Hoses
  • Why It Matters: Cracked or loose belts and hoses can cause overheating or power steering failure.
  • How to Do It: Visually inspect for cracks, fraying, or looseness. Tighten or replace as needed with the right tools (e.g., wrench for tension adjustment).
  • Frequency: Every 10,000 miles or during other tune-up tasks.

Tools You’ll Need
  • Basic wrench set
  • Spark plug socket
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Funnel and drain pan
  • Replacement parts (filters, plugs, oil, fluids)
  • Safety gloves and goggles

Safety First
Always work on a flat surface, disconnect the battery when working on electrical components, and never smoke near fuel or oil. If you’re unsure, consult your vehicle’s manual or a professional.

3 Tips to Protect Your Engine from Texas Heat

6/3/2025

The Texas heat is coming! Please watch for these three signs and be proactive to protect your engine. We don’t want to see any of our clients blow an engine over a simple repair or maintenance issue.

  1. Pay Attention to Your AC: If your AC isn’t blowing cold it could mean that you need a simple recharge, which we can provide. However, it could also be a sign that you’re losing water or coolant. We recently had a client blow an engine. After talking to them, they stated that their AC had stopped working about a week earlier. If we had known this we could have repaired the issue and saved their engine, which blew out because of water loss.
  2. Watch Your Temp Gauge: The instrument panel on the dash has a temperature gauge. If you notice it pushing toward the hot end - DO NOT DRIVE it. Even driving a few miles with a hot engine can blow the engine out. Leave it parked where it is and call us. We’ll drive to your vehicle. It could be as simple as low coolant or a faulty thermostat. Minor repairs or maintenance can save you from a huge bill to replace your engine.
  3. Be Aware of Odd Smells: If you smell coolant, burning, or rubber - STOP DRIVING your vehicle. Texas heat can create cracks in your rubber water hoses or plastic connection points. We’d make more money replacing your engine, but we want to SAVE YOU MONEY and fix the minor issues before they blow your engine and break your budget.

Call or Text us at 737-900-3213, or request a service appointment at www.dgbautorepair.com. Let’s keep your car cool and your summer worry-free!

We service Round Rock, Hutto, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Jarrell, Cedar Park, and Austin, Texas.

Stay safe and enjoy your summer,

3 Essential Tire Safety Tips to Prevent Blowouts This Summer | Don’t Go Broke Auto in Round Rock, TX

5/22/2025

Picture
Summer in Central Texas means scorching heat and epic road trips to places like Austin’s Barton Springs or Georgetown’s Blue Hole. At Don’t Go Broke Auto in Round Rock, TX, we want you to enjoy every adventure safely, whether you’re driving through Pflugerville, Hutto, Georgetown, Cedar Park, or Jarrell. Heat-related tire blowouts are a real risk, with the NHTSA reporting around 11,000 tire-related crashes annually in the USA. Don’t let a preventable tire issue ruin your summer fun. Here are three essential tire safety tips to keep you safe on Central Texas roads.

Why Tire Safety Matters in Central Texas Summers
In Round Rock, Austin, and surrounding areas, summer temperatures often exceed 100°F, putting extra stress on your tires. Hot pavement and expanded tire air can lead to dangerous blowouts. By checking your tires regularly, you can avoid breakdowns, stay safe, and enjoy your summer worry-free. At Don’t Go Broke Auto, we’re proud to help drivers in Pflugerville, Hutto, Georgetown, Cedar Park, and Jarrell keep their vehicles road-ready.

3 Simple Tire Safety Tips to Prevent Blowouts
1.
Check Tire Pressure Monthly for Safe Driving
Central Texas heat causes tire air to expand, increasing the risk of overinflation and blowouts. To stay safe:
  • Use a tire pressure gauge to check pressure when tires are “cold” (before driving).
  • Find the recommended PSI on your vehicle’s driver-side door jamb or owner’s manual.
  • Adjust pressure to stay within the safe range, especially during Austin or Georgetown heatwaves.

2. Inspect Tires for Wear and Damage
Worn or damaged tires are more likely to fail in Central Texas’s extreme heat. Here’s how to spot trouble:
  • Look for cracks, bulges, or uneven tread wear on each tire.
  • Use the penny test: Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head down. If you see the top of his head, your tread is too low, raising blowout risks on Hutto or Pflugerville highways.
  • Check sidewalls for dry rot (small cracks), which worsens in summer heat.
If you notice any issues, visit a professional tire shop in Round Rock or nearby areas for inspection or replacement. Safe tires mean safer summer drives for you and your family.

3. Monitor Tire Age to Avoid Heat-Related Failures
Central Texas heat accelerates tire aging, especially for tires over six years old. Old tires are prone to blowouts, even if they look fine. To check tire age:
  • Find the 4-digit code on the tire’s sidewall (e.g., 2319 means the tire was made in the 23rd week of 2019).
  • If your tires are six years or older, or show signs of aging like cracking, replace them before hitting roads in Austin, Georgetown, or Jarrell.

At Don’t Go Broke Auto in Round Rock, we recommend proactive tire checks to keep you safe. A quick inspection now can prevent a dangerous blowout later.

Stay Safe and Enjoy Your Central Texas Summer with Don’t Go Broke Auto
